Located in Hiawassee, mountains of Northeast Georgia; we’re just two hours northeast of metro Atlanta

Local Information

Towns County was created in 1856 in the northeast corner of Georgia. It was named for George W. Towns, an early governor of the state. Hiawassee is the county seat. The Cherokee Indian's influence can still be found locally on road signs: Hiawassee, Chatuge, Enotah, Tater Ridge, Bugscuffle, Frog Pond, and Shake Rag, among others.

Towns County covers 106,240 acres including 75,000 in the Chattahoochee National Forest and 7,000 owned by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), which built Lake Chatuge in 1941.
